My 10 yr old male cat has had labored breathing 2 weeks and

my 10 yr old male cat has had labored breathing for about 2 weeks and now he appears to be losing weight
our vet is new (only practicing 2 yrs or so) doesn't have xray equip he gave the cat a steroid injection but after a week i see no change in his breathing do cats suffer from asthma

They do and that's a common cause of coughing in cats. Your cat's dyspnea (difficulty breathing) associated with weight loss, however, isn't necessarily related to asthma particularly because he hasn't responded to the treatment of choice for asthma - a steroid such as prednisolone. It's important that you find a vet with an X-ray machine. I'm concerned that your cat's chest is effusive - full of fluid - or perhaps cardiac disease (cardiomyopathy/heart muscle disease, often) is present. Effusions can represent malignancy in the chest cavity, congestive heart failure, and less commonly chyle or pus. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
