Customer Question

my cat has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. I just started checking his glucose at home this morning. His chemstick this morning before any food was 436. I only gave him 1 unit. It seems like I should have given more. I am using vetsulin. Is this the best insulin for a cat?

Hello,

I am sorry to hear that Daniel is diabetic. I am a veterinarian and will do my best to help.

436 is high, and he may need more than one unit. I would consult your veterinarian, but it may be time to go to 2 units twice daily.

There are different insulins, and what works best in one cat may not be best in another diabetic cat. I personally usually start cats on Prozinc insulin, but have had many cats do well on Vetsulin. Sometimes neither one works, and then I try Lantus insulin, for people.

It is important to start diabetic cats on a low carbohydrate diet, and there are many good diets made especially for diabetic cats. Sometimes if you change the diet and start insulin, cats will go into remission and not need insulin. Remission does not happen in most diabetic cats, but it is important to change his diet, if you have not already done that.

Let me know what else I can help with or answer. Rebecca
