Ask Your Own Cat Veterinary Question

Dr_Karla :

what product are you using? plain tramadol or another that contains acetaminophen?

Customer:

tramadol 50 mg,

Dr_Karla :

is your kitty having any pain?

Dr_Karla :

is this from a vet office?

Dr_Karla :

how much does kitty weight?

Customer:

she is limping, i think she got her foot caught on the bed when she jumped off

Customer:

not sure on her weight

Dr_Karla :

we dose drugs on weight, so please make a good estimate?

Dr_Karla :

sometimes cats can have reactions to certain opiates. Although tramadol is a strong opiate, I have given it to cats

Dr_Karla :

i do need a weight, though

Customer:

6

lbs maybe

Dr_Karla :

hang on. let me take a look in the book

Customer:

ok

Customer:

should i be worried that she is limping and how long should i wait before taking her to the vet

Dr_Karla :

how long since it happened?

Customer:

1 hr

Dr_Karla :

feel any swelling?

Dr_Karla :

putting any weight on it?

Customer:

not that i can tell

Customer:

sometimes yes and sometimes no

Dr_Karla :

i would look at toenails, then up to toes, then up to hock

Dr_Karla :

feel all up and down

Dr_Karla :

feel for swelling or heat

Customer:

not feeling any swelling or heat

Dr_Karla :

her dose would be 6 mg, which is 1/8 of a tablet. hard to cut down like that. Mostly with cats, they shoot out a lot of endorphins when they are injured, so you may want to let her rest on it and see how she looks in the morning, without any meds. Def cannot give tylenol or advil or anything like that. If she is non-weight bearing in the morning, I would have your vet look at it

Dr_Karla :

i would not do meds in case she had some reaction to it. I would not feed tonight in case they need to sedate for anything

Customer:

ok ty

Dr_Karla :

just try and keep her enclosed and see how she looks in morning. let me know if you have any more questions. Please dont forget to rate my answer if I was helpful.

Customer:

ok thank you

Dr_Karla :

welcome. hope she feels better
