Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and specialist and will do my best to assist you today!

Based on the history you report above, as well as the age of your cat, the 2 most likely causes include:

1) Sterile Cystitis (
LINK HERE)
2) Urinary tract infection

Typically in these cases, aside from a good examination, a urine sample (Urinalysis -
LINK HERE and possibly Urine Culture - LINK HERE) are performed helping to differentiate the causes listed above.

If the cystitis is diagnosed, common therapies considered include:

1) Special foods such as "Royal Canin / Waltham SO" (LINK HERE)

2) Offering as much water as possible, even using a kitty fountain - LINK HEREi you can purchase in the pet store at times entices cats to drink more.

3) Phenoxybenazmine - LINK HERE

4) Buprenorphine - LINK HERE

If a UTI is diagnosed, antibiotics will be needed.

Regarding other therapies considered, cranberry can be used to decrease the inflammation of the bladder This can be purchased online or at your local pet store. (LINK HERE).

I hope this helps!
