my cat is having urinary problems so he had an ultrasound of his bladder. They found a mass. Could an infection show on an ultrasound? They perscribed a course of orbifloxacin.

Thanks for the question.Sorry to hear about Tiger ...While I cannot diagnose his problem via the internet I can make the following general comments based on my past experience of such cases over the years : 1. Where there is a long standing bladder infection then yes it can show up on ultrasound or X-ray as a thickening of the bladder wall. Some cancers of the bladder can also cause thickening so confusion is possible. Other masses { cancers } of the bladder are much more noticeable and this would be the most likely reason your vet has given you the diagnosis he or she has.2. Orbifloxacin is an antibiotic which may be used for bladder infections. If I was dealing with such a case face to face I might be tempted to run another ultrasound a week or so after the end of the antibiotics to see if anything may have changed. If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.Scott Scott Nimmo BVMS, MRCVS. They saw a definate mass and could not r/o cancer without a biopsy. A month and a half ago he had 1-131 treatment for hyperthyroid. He seemed to be doing well and had lab and urinalysis work done 2 weeks ago and all was normal. It is hard to say if his bladder and urine problems are new because prior to this treatment he had urinate very frequently. I'm so frustrated and very sad
Hello again,Glad to talk this over with you further ...I know this is big upset for you as I am a cat person myself. You have a difficult decision to make, on one hand Tiger is sixteen and I can see you do not want to put him through a biopsy, I am sure I might feel the same myself. On the other hand as your vet will have told you there are some quite effective treatments for some forms of bladder cancer which if they do not effect a complete cure would often give a long period of remission. You can read more of this HEREI have used piroxicam for example sometimes with good results and with this drug if it does no good it certainly will not make your cat feel worse. But you would really want a biopsy first ...Not easy I know ... Regards,Scott
