Customer Question

My cat possibly ate my Ferocon pill this morning what should I do? She is a 5 yr old female tabby with no medical issues.

Optional Information:
Type of Animal: Feline
Gender: Female
Age: 5
Name of Cat: Pepper

Already Tried:
She possibly ate the pill at 8:30-9:00 mst this morning. She vomited about 1/2 hr ago and it was looked like her hard cat food but a bit darker. I have done nothing because I wasn't sure she ate it or I forgot and I had taken it. Now that she has vomited I am concerned.

vetdeb :

Hi, I'm Dr. Deb. I will do my best to assist you today.

vetdeb :

In large enough doses, iron can be toxic to cats. The vomiting that she did may be in response to the pill that she ingested or might not be....at this point, it may be hard to tell.

Customer :

Thank you

vetdeb :

Is she showing any other signs?

vetdeb :

Lethargic, weak, increased respiratory rate, tremors, diarrhea?

Customer :

The pill is large and has label B-635...none of those symptons yet.

vetdeb :

If she had just eaten the pill, I would have suggested that you try to get her to vomit...but clearly a lot of time has passed and that wouldn't help now.

vetdeb :

It is far more common for a dog to eat something like this than a cat...it could be toxic for them too but they usually weigh more than a dog...usually.

vetdeb :

...weigh more than a cat...sorry.

Customer :

I wasn't sure if I had taken the pill with the rest of pills I take.

vetdeb :

Does the pill have a milligram dose on it?

Customer :

no

vetdeb :

I understand....I often can't remember if I've taken all of my pills:) ...the joys of aging!!!

vetdeb :

Does the bottle say anything?

vetdeb :

Has Pepper vomited in the past...hairballs, for example?

Customer :

no...

vetdeb :

Let me see if it comes in different sizes...give me a minute.

Customer :

yes..she often will vomit after eating

Customer :

she had just ate when she vomitted...however the food did look darker than normal

vetdeb :

I'm not sure that the darker color should be over-interpreted. It probably is a good thing that she vomited, if she did eat the pill.

Customer :

I am trying to reach my pharmacy to get mg of pill dose

vetdeb :

Toxicity of this sort is primarily supportive care...we don't have a specific antidote for iron toxicity so if she starts to show other symptoms, like I mentioned earlier, than I would have her seen immediately. Until then, there really isn't anything that can..or should...be done at this point since it was hours ago.

Customer :

I was glad in that aspect but nervous in that she could be showing symptoms of having ate the pill

vetdeb :

Since as you said, she has vomited in the past, this may just be a scary coincidence.....we can hope, anyway.

Customer :

110 mg iron

vetdeb :

OK, thanks. let me do a little math

Customer :

It has 110 mg of iron in the pill

vetdeb :

It looks like Pepper may be ok even if she did ingest 110 mg of iron; 50-100 mg is a normal dose for an average sized cat.

vetdeb :

I doubt she ate the pill but even if she did, it wouldn't hurt her, I am happy to say:)

Customer :

Great!!! I felt so bad that I had left the pill on the table. She is always on the table sun bathing no matter how I shooo her away!!

vetdeb :

Cats will do what they want to, won't they???

Customer :

Yes, especially this one. Squats wherever she wants to.....Thank you!!!
