i've noticed a couple of spots of fresh blood on my bed, where 4 of my cats sleep. I've inspected each of them for wounds and scabs; I also checked their ears, noses, mouths and butts but can't find an obvious source of the blood. i'm happy to take them all to the vet but was hoping you could help me first.
Optional Information: Type of Animal: Cat Gender: Male Age: 12 Name of Cat: Othello Already Tried: My cats are both male and female (all neutered). Range in age from 6 to 12. I've inspected all of them but can't find the source of the blood. The blood spot is about the size of a nickel - had one this morning and one last week.
Welcome to JustAnswer! I am a licensed veterinarian and specialist and will do my best to assist you today! It is always difficult to determine where this is coming from, but more often than not, with a history such as this - it is from the urine that there is blood (when no obvious external cause is found)Ideally -although I know not easy - separate them to monitor them over the next 24 hours.2 in 1 room? 2 in the other? Each with their own food, water, and litter to help narrow down which of the cats is showing these signs and then which one needs to be seen by the vet. This is meant to be a running dialogue, and for this reason it is very IMPORTANT that you reply using the REPLY TO EXPERT button if more information is needed at any time BEFORE rating.Positive RATING (EXCITED FACE or 5 STARS) and bonus if happy is appreciated as this is the only way I know you have received the information and I receive credit for my time. Please remember to ONLY rate my answer when you are 100% satisfied. Thank you. Is it really possible for fresh blood to come out of the cat's urethra like that, not diluted with urine? To me, it looks like blood from a wound. However, I also noticed some light red, small blood spots on my bathroom's tile floor - those look like they've been diluted with water or some other liquid. If you do believe it's possible for this to be coming from the urethra, I suspect it is Othello (male cat, 12 years old), as he spends the most time in that particular bathroom. Taking him to the vet is easy to do.
Yes - it is very possible. The other spot would be from the mouth that I would check as that can be concealed at times. Hi Marcia,I'm just following up on our conversation about Othello. How is everything going?CriticalCareVet
Hi there - thank you for checking in on Othello - he is such a good boy! Now I'm thinking it's my other male cat, Columbus. I saw some blood on the sofa where he had been sleeping. I will take all of them to the vet Monday. Quite a mystery. Is there a way I can follow up with you after I get the results?Marcia

Good morning: I wanted to give you an update on my cat situation as you might be interested in knowing what the result was. I took Columbus into the vet on July 11. His BP was under control (good news, as he was diagnosed with hypertension in December). I noticed that he had lost 2 pounds in the last 3 months - I thought that his diabetes had stabilized and he finally had his appetite under control. The vet found a little sore on Columbus' hind toe. She said that was the source of the blood. On closer inspection, she saw that there was an abcess, and gave him a 2-week antibiotic injection, suggesting i come back in 2 weeks. She took Columbus in the back to clean up his sore, and returned to tell me he had cancer. The sore was actually a pretty large tumor on his foot. She did an x-ray and showed me that the tumor was already in the bone of his foot. So, the plan was for me to come back in 2 weeks - he wasn't limping at all. I asked her to do a chest x-ray of Columbus as a precaution. Well, it turned out that he had a large tumor in his chest, pressing on his trachea. I was stunned. She told me he wasn't suffering and to come back in 2 weeks. To make a long story short :(, he started coughing (he had been coughing but i thought he had fur balls, which never came up ...) and then stopped eating. I had to "let him go" to his next adventure on July 17, less than a week after he was diagnosed. Columbus was blind, had been abused, had diabetes, but he was an extremely well-known and loved cat. Everyone loved Columbus. Letting him go was a shock to me, but he deteriorated so quickly that I had to do it. The vet came to the house - I and some neighbors gathered around - one neighbor said prayers - even Columbus' best cat friend, Mama, lay by his side. He had a very peaceful passing. So, just to let you know the sad ending to this question. Unbelieveable! Marcia
