My cat eats Authority Hair ball Management formula cat food. He is 4 years old and has just been diagnosed with struvite crystals in his urine. He is on meds. that are working for another 5 days. What should we be feeding him to prevent this crystal formation from happening again?

Welcome! I would be happy to assist you. I am a 2003 graduate from UC Davis and a Medical Director of a veterinarian practice.Hello, Well, it depends on what the urine pH was at the time of finding the struvite crystals, as well as, if there was any active urinary tract infection. An infection can cause struvite crystals!!!!!So, ideally, a urine culture should be done to ensure no infection. Second, if really high struvite count, then very likely that diet must go!I would ask your vet about starting a food like Science Diet C/D Multicare, or Royal Canin S/O. Two very popular and very effective diets and helping regulate crystal formation. Hope that info helpsGood LuckDr. Andy Please reply ANY time more information is needed using the REPLY TO EXPERT button. Yes a urine culture was done. Which is why I was requesting food choices to keep my little furry one healthy. Now these choices still contain all the right mineral and other vital nutrients to keep a cat healthy? what about the Magnesium? I hear different opinions on this. It causes crystals and it is nessary for a cat to have a small amount of Magnesium for his body fuction.
Yes. They are well balanced and clinically tested. Magnesium is a component of struvite crystals, and it is regulated in both diets. Remember, the key is regulation, doesn't have to be completed eliminated. Dr. Andy Please reply ANY time more information is needed using the REPLY TO EXPERT button.
