Customer Question

My cat has enlarged adrenal glands caused from chronic stress from kidney disease. His biggest problem right now is he has little to no appetite.. He is 16 years old. We are giving him fluids every 3 to 4 days and also giving him Mirtazapine as prescribed. Is there a homeopathic remedy to lget him to where he could possibly get some appetite.
thank you for any help,

Mark

Sophie-Vet :

Hi there, I am Sophie a registered veterinarian and I'd like to try to help you.

Sophie-Vet :

I'm sorry to hear your cat has not been well.

Customer :

Thanks, I'm trying to figure out how to get him to eat. His vet has ruled out cancer so I was hoping if I could get him to eat we could get him some more time.

Sophie-Vet :

It is quite common for cats with kidney disease to feel rubbish. Are you feeding him a special diet for his kidneys or are you feeding him regular cat food?

Sophie-Vet :

Some of the foods designed for kidney disease can be very unpalatable.

Customer :

Wellness is the brand he'll eat occasionally not kidney diet.

Sophie-Vet :

Ok, there are special diets for cats with kidney disease, this can really help the root of the problem as the reason he is not eating is purely because he feels so rubbish with all these toxins in his blood.

Sophie-Vet :

Unfortunately they are not palatable but there are pastes that do not taste bad that you can add to the food to give them the same effect of reducing the phosphorus.

Customer :

His vet never mentioned a kidney diet. Do you have suggestions. I read something about a product called PetAlive Adrenal Super Boost. Any comment on that please.

Sophie-Vet :

I would try something like a Hills k/d.

Customer :

You mention pastes that can be added. Please specify.

Sophie-Vet :

The paste I use is called Renalzin and it is phosphate binder (it just holds onto the phosphate in the diet so your cats kidneys dont have to process so much). With adrenal and kidney disease things can rapidly become quite serious so I feel the best treatment would be with traditional medicine. Famotidine is a drug that can help your cat to eat by helping settle the stomach which can make a big difference to how they are feeling. Increasing water content is so important too to flush out all those toxins.

Sophie-Vet :

Vitamin B12 can really help get cats off their feet and stimulate appetite too.

Sophie-Vet :

Apart from the famotidine bost of these are pretty natural.

Customer :

Dosage on the B12? Pill form?

Sophie-Vet :

Injectable is usually most effective, let me try to find a dose for pills, give me just a second

Customer :

I'll see about getting the injectable. Thank you so much!

Sophie-Vet :

That's ok, for your information there are no oral preparations available for cats.

Customer :

Have you seen cats hang on for 6 months - 1 year if they can get their appetite back?

Sophie-Vet :

Yes depending on the toxin levels. I see much better results with convential medicine than homeopathy for these cases.

Sophie-Vet :

Another thing you could ask your vet to check is the level of anaemia, sometimes a product to boost the red blood cells can help.

Sophie-Vet :

You'd need a blood test to check this.

Customer :

We've had blood work done as well as Ultrasound of his abdomen. So I'll ask about the anemia levels.

Sophie-Vet :

Perfect. Well I hope this information helps you to make some informed choices, and gives you something to speak to your vet about.

Sophie-Vet :

I really hope this has been helpful for you, I wish you and your kitty the best of luck.

Customer :

Thank you Sophie, you've been most helpful!

Sophie-Vet :

No problem, if you need anything else, just reply.

Customer :

thank you I will.

Sophie-Vet :

Please accept my answer if it has been helpful, many thanks and best of luck.

I'm sorry, but we had to put Bigglesworth to sleep. He was riddled with so many things and he refused to eat anything. I think of him all the time. He was my best friend. Thanks for your help.
