Why does my cat do the chewing motion when he is not eating,

Customer Question

Why does my cat do the chewing motion when he is not eating, just laying and resting and moving his jaw. What is wrong?

Hi there. He may have something stuck between his cheek and gums in the back of his mouth, or may have something stuck in his teeth, or something stuck up into the roof of his mouth, etc. Also, some animals grind their teeth. I have had two dogs who grind their teeth when they are just sitting around. It can also be caused by a bad tooth that is loose. If it just started and has never happened before, I would have a vet do a thorough oral exam if you can't find anything. Hope this helps... best of luck.

Well, he has done this for a couple years. He is doing it more now.

He has two very large canine teeth in the front. Would they be too long?
