Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Hi there

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Thank you for your question regarding your cat who has a patch of hair missing under her chin/neck

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

This could well be related to the new food in causing a contact allergy with it - or there could be another underlying cause such as a flea allergy

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

What sort of bowl do you use for this girl?

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Is she up to date with flea treatments?

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

ok thanks. She was eating a certain food that i could not find in my new city. so i got science diet. how quickly should i go back to the old stuff? Is switching the food back enough? or does she need medical attention>>

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

i live in NYC she doesnt get out or around much. i just had her for 3 months. I have not had her to the vet yet

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

If it is just simply the hair missing then don't panic - you can slowly switch her back to her regular diet to see if the hair returns

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

ok

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

If the skin is reddened and sore - you will need to get her seen as she may well need an antibiotic course etc

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

ok yes her skin is red but im not sure if its sore.

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Ok

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

i am going away for two days. do you think its ok to leave her on the old diet.?

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

or does she need change right now>/?

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

You can apply a very small amount of neosporin to the area a couple of times per day to see if this helps

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

You are best changing back on to the other food eventually to see if the hair returns, but you will need to do this slowly to prevent a stomach upset

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Also be sure to get a flea/mite treatment for her

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

I'd recommend one called Advocate

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

ok

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

thank you

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

also

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

in the meantime of me getting neosporine.

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

can i use an anti itch cream

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

or anything else around the house

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

No - many human products are toxic to cats

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

oh ok

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

In this area as well --> she'll just paw it off, then lick her paw - so you have to be very careful

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

good to know

JACUSTOMER-jixve8oh- :

thx

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Yes -you must be very careful with cats

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Try a very small amount of neosporin and rub it in well

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Change her food back to what she was on (slowly)

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Get an advocate flea/worming treatment on to her

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

And consider an elizabethan collar if she is scratching/pawing the area excessively

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Do you have any other questions?

Dr M D Edwards BVSc MRCVS :

Just reply if you have any other worries about this girl
