Customer Question

is it safe to give a small dose of temazepam to a cat weighing 4 kg? He needs lancing of an abscess and vet unavailable until Monday. Have sterile equipment available and EMLA cream

Optional Information:
Type of Animal: cat domestic short haired
Gender: male
Age: 9

Already Tried:
Have already cleaned catbite abscess which appeared to improve and dried. Today the area is bulging with an obvious collection of pus underneath. I tried to clean it to dislodge a scab to hopefully release the scab but it is now healed. It is exquisitely painful, My vet is unavailable for 36 hours. The recommended emergency vet is 10 miles away and the cats goes crazy on a car journey.

I have EMLA available (+ injectable lidocaine 1%), sterile field, scapel and Fucidic acid ointment. I would take him to the vet on Monday in any case. I have some temazepam 10mg tablets (human medication) and wondered if this would be helpful in a small dose. We already use a plug-in pheramone dispenser but I have 2 toms that spar regularly.

ps I am a trained nurse but not veterinary.

Howdy :)

Temazepam is not a drug commonly used in cats. In a quick search I was unable to find any reference to it at all, so I wouldn't recommend using it.

Let me know if I can be of futher assistance :)

Thank you. Is it safe to use the EMLA? I would be very reluctant to inject lidocaine and have no idea of the feline dose?

I mean no disrespect, but I'm not comfortable advising you in this situation. (replied initially before the full post was available) I'm going to opt out so that another expert can have the opportunity. My recommendation would be to take your kitty to the ER :)
Best of luck
~Dr. Sara
