Other than pregnancy and overeating (like our Dottina) weight gain is not generally a symptom of disease in cats. And pregnancy, of course, is not a disease.

Seriously, it's important to be sure that it is truly weight gain and not fluid retention. Cats can acquire a disease called Infectious Peritonitis that will cause the abdoman (belly) to fill with fluid giving you the impression of weight gain. Any veterinarian should be able, with a physical exam, tell you whether what you see is fat or fluid.
