Customer Question

we looked at manx kittens today. The owner told us a common characteristic is weepy eyes until about 3 or 4 months old. Also there was alot of sneezing among all the kittens. They have not been vaccinated yet. What do you think? Is it safe to bring one of these home to another cat 1 year old?

It definitely sounds like the kittens have a virus. I wouldn't consider that normal, but it usually resolves with good nursing care. Usually they need some eye ointment and sometimes an antibiotic to help clear it up. It is a virus, however, and will have to run it's course over 10 to 14 days.

If your adult cat is vaccinated, most likely he will not catch the virus. Most cats are vaccinated against these viruses and when the kitten is better you should start vaccines right away.

Before you expose your older cat to the kitten, I would test the kitten for feline leukemia just to make sure you don't expose your other cat to that as well. Most adult cats and kittens are vaccinated against feline leukemia, but no vaccine is 100%.
