My bengal cat has had chronic diarrhea since he was a kitten.

Customer Question

My bengal cat has had chronic diarrhea since he was a kitten. I've been to two different vets, tried antibiotics, digestive enzymes, de-worming treatment, holistic food, nothing seems to help. How can I get rid of the diarrhea?

Hi there,

How old is your cat now?

Vomiting historically?

Good appetite?

What tests have been done historically looking for a caue?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
He is 3 years old. He has a very good appetite, lots of energy, and no problems with vomiting. He has been on Albon suspension, Endsorb, and most recently Metronidazole. He had a stool sample analyzed but nothing unusual found, he had another worming treatment about 5 months ago. The vet said I could bring in another stool sample and they could have it sent to some special lab to test for parasites, but that would be expensive and I am currently unemployed, so I can't afford the extra money right now. I dont' remember what other tests he's had, I will try to find my folder with his records...

Hi there,

Certainly sounds like you have been through a lot already - and of course making sure there is no underlying cause such as parasites, bacteria, or systemic disease...there are some cats that have a food allergy or food sensitivity which can cause chronic signs just like this!

The way to really diagnose this would be with endoscopy and intestinal biopsies...

But - what we can start with is food change...but a special food or special type of food...

Options for food change would be:
- A different brand
- A sensitive stomach diet

And then there are prescription diets used for situations of food allergies. These would need to be prescribed by a veterinarian. The basis of this hypersensitivity is that there is an allergy to the protein

So...our options would be:

- Novel protein such as duck, lamb, rabbit, etc. The goal of these diets is to have a protein not in typical food such as chicken or beef

- Hydrolyzed diet - although the protein is chicken or beef or something more common, the protein is "chopped up" so small that the intestine does not reconize it as a normal protein.

I hope this information helps :)

I've tried different brands of food, food for sensitive digestive systems, corn, gluten, and preservative free food, and currently have him on holistic food (anchovy, sardine, and salmon meal with oatmeal formula--no chicken or beef). None of that seems to have helped. His stools have always been very soft, only somewhat solid when he's on medication, but lately they have been extremely runny. Do you still think its dietary rather than a parasite or something?

Hi there,

With your degree of chronicity, while I can not rule-out parasites...3 years seems like quite a long time for an infectious cause to go undiagnosed.

I would tend to lean towards food, but really to officially diagnose inflammatory bowel disease of a food hypersensitivity you would need either surgical or endoscopic intestinal biopsies.
