Hello from JustAnswer. The risk of a low potassium depends upon the severity of the low potassium. Normal potassium levels are necessary for proper functioning of all nerves and muscles in the body. Severely low potassium levels can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, some of what can be life threatening. Less severe low potassium will usually cause diffuse or focal muscle weakness, muscle cramps, or generalized fatigue. Other muscle weakness can be manifested a constipation or difficulty passing urine. If your doctor has told you that your potassium is low and is treating it at home with oral potassium, then the level would not have been so low that there would be concern for life threatening abnormal heart rhythms. If I can provide any additional information, please let me know.

Low potassium level can cause several health problems. Mildly low potassium levels can cause muscle cramps and pain. In addition, mildly low potassium levels can cause muscle spasm. Severely low potassium level can be dangerous because the heart relies on potassium for its electrical activity and function. Severely low potassium level can result in heart arrhythmia which can be life threatening and even fatal.Do you have other questions regarding low potassium levels?
