I have a 2005 Forenza Wagon (S) with approximately 41,000 miles on it. I purchased it brand new and I am the only owner. Just recently, there have been a few episodes where, after inserting the key in the ignition switch, the switch would not unlock and, of course, the gears were also locked. The gear lever was firmly placed in Park. I couldn't move it to "Neutral" to try to start it that way. I removed the key, swore a lot, and tried again. After 3 attempts, it started. This has happened three times. Yesterday, a 90 degree day, I drove a short distance (about 15 minutes), went in a store for about 20 minutes, and when I came out, put the key in the ignition switch and while it turned completely, all the lights came on and there was no response from the engine. I double-checked the gear which was NOT locked at that point, made sure it was in Park, and tried again. Nothing. Left the car for about 3 minutes to call for help. Came back and tried once more and the dang thing started right up. My husband thought it might be the starter solenoid (sp?) and purchased one, but he can't get the old starter out to replace it. It's in there for life! Is there anything else you can think of that it might be? I've had this car quite awhile and never had a serious problem with it before. In advance, I thank you for any suggestions.
Since I have zero mechanical knowledge, when you answer I will need a few minutes to get my husband to the computer. Please answer as soon as possible as he's working on the car right now and frankly, we're flummoxed as to the core problem!
