I put a new 4 barrel holley on my 351 v8 ford cleveland and now it stars but when it gets hot and I turn it of, the engine keeps running for a while and then comes to a very abrupt stop as if its running on pre ignition.
JA: Have you checked the coolant? Have you noticed any leaking?
Customer: I have not had any coolant leaks but i think thjuddering stop has made the gearbox oil leka out onto the floor
JA: What is the model/year of your Ford?
Customer: ita a 1979 ford falcon 531 cu
JA: Are you fixing your Falcon yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes I am doing it my self and the engine ran ok until I replaced the carby because the old one sprung a petrol leak
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: I am not sure if it should run on ulp or have the additve in the petrol.

What port did you use on the carb?

there is only one port on the holley,near the front float chamber

There should be 4 vacuum ports, one on the side of the metering block just behind the front float bowl, two on the bottom of the front of the carb and on on the back of the bottom of the carb. The one on the side is a ported vacuum port and you may not use it, one of the front bottom ports is a smaller port for the distributor, and the bigger one is for the pcv valve. The one on the back bottom is for the vacuum port for the power brake booster.

If you have the distributor connected to the side, then you have no vacuum going to the distributor vacuum advance at idle and the timming is retarded to much and can cause the engine to diesel and not shut off right away.
