It won't start at all. No gage lights come on when I turn

Customer Question

It won't start at all. No gage lights come on when I turn the key in the ignition. The alarm is not working when I try to lock it from my key itself. It will not lock from the inside using the power lock on the door panel.
JA: Is the car in "Park" or "Neutral?" Do you know if your car has a "wheel lock" feature?
Customer: Park. I don't know. What is a wheel lock?
JA: What is the make/model/year of your car?
Customer: 2003 Isuzu Rodeo
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Are you there?
JA: No. I'm the Mechanic's Assistant.
Customer: I don't know if it's the altinator, battery, starter?
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: Engine light is on but it disappears and comes back on at random times.

Hi Im David, first things first. we need to make sure your battery is ok. Do you have another vehicle available and do you have jumper cables?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
This is my only one right now. I haven't tried to jump start it yet but do have cables. There is some corrosion in and around the spark plugs. The battery is not new but not that old either.
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

well its pretty important that we start at the battery being good. do you have a multi meter?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

Unless I know that the battery is good the only thing I can offer is to check all the fuses in the engine compartment fuse panel to see if any are blown

Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

make sure the battery terminals are free of corrosion and that they are tight.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Ok I will get back to you shortly
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

ok, looking forward to helping you out with this problem

any progress?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I tried jump starting it. It starts but cuts off again. It won't idle long before it cuts off. It cuts off soon after putting it in R or D. But if I switch to N, it idles longer before it cuts off again. I have a feeling it's going to cost a lot of money to get this fixed if I take it to a shop.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I'm not sure what a meter is that you are referring to. Will any auto parts store have it?
Expert:  david craig replied 3 months ago.

we need to make sure its not the alternator. a meter is essential for this. you can get a cheap one at harbor freight or auto parts store.

its called a multi meter
