Customer Question

I have a 2012 VW Jetta, diesel, auto tranny. Can I tow this car 4 down, if I leave the engine running while towing?

Hi there,

You have no transmission operation?

Will there be a driver in this vehicle while being towed?

I am talking about pulling behind a motorhome with a tow bar. Car in great running shape. I know it cannot be towed with the engine off, but wondering if I let the engine run, will it provide the lubrication necessary to the driveline? Or do I need to put it on a dolly? Thanks.

I would have the engine running, most likely select drive in the Jetta, while the tow vehicle is in Park, handbrake on, and then drive off in the tow vehicle.

I think the trans would be happier shifting gear by road speed, it would think you are just coasting down a long hill.

I would setup a gopro camera on the Jettas instruments.

I have bee told having it in DRIVE is not a good idea. Do you know FOR SURE either DRIVE or NEUTRAL is ok, with the engine running?
Thanks.

Hi again,

I think you would be better in neutral, engine running.

I still would like some form of monitoring system on the engine.

Perhaps a Bluetooth obd dongle to a smartphone app.

Kind regards

Gary
