Customer Question

I have a 2006 Monte Carlo. I bought it used from Fla. I put new rims and tires on it. It bounced. Thought it was the rims or tires, but they tried 3 sets of tires and 2 different sets of rims. They did a full alignment, new rotors, and 2 new half shafts. It's almost gone with the winter wheels on it. So we put 2 of the new rims on and tried it. Ran ok. Took those 2 off and replaced them with the other 2 new ones. It ran ok. Then put the first 2 on. I now have 4 new rims and tires on. It ran ok that day but the next day it bounced as bad as ever. I have had 3 different mechanics look at it. 1 guy said it's the aftermarket rims. I can't believe that. I did go from 16" on winter wheels to 17" summer wheels. What else do I try? Mike

I don't see any service bulletin's.

How many miles on the car?

Was it doing it before you put the rims and tires on?

Are you getting a shimmy while driving?

What speed does it occur at?

What do you mean by "it bounced"?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
34000 MILES. A LITTLE I THOUGHT THE WINTER WHEELS WERE OUT OF BALANCE. NO SHIMMY JUST BOUNCING. ALL SPEEDS. YOU CAN SEE THE BACK OF THE PASSENGER SEAT BOUNCE AND YOU CAN FEEL IT IN YOUR SEAT. BUT HERE'S THE FUNNY PART, THE DAY I PUT THE WHEELS ON IT RAN GOOD, THE NEXT DAY IT BOUNCES.
Expert:  Daniel Jones replied 4 months ago.

If the car is bouncing than it probably needs shocks or struts.

WHY WOULD IT BOUNCE LESS WITH THE WINTER WHEELS ON IT?
Expert:  Daniel Jones replied 4 months ago.

Do the aftermarket rims have a different offset than the stock rims?

What size are the winter tires vs the summer tires?

Customer: replied 4 months ago.
I'M NOT SURE ON THE OFFSET. THE TIRE SHOP ORDERED THEM. THE WINTER WHEELS ARE 225 60 16 THE SUMMER WHEELS ARE 222 50 17
Expert:  Daniel Jones replied 4 months ago.

The winter tires have more sidewall than the other tires. The new tires have a more low profile. See attached image.

Have the shocks checked.
