good afternoon my name is ***** ***** I will assist

the oil pan needs to be dropped, the pick up screen removed. the center main bearing cap needs to be removed. that is here the thrust bearing is located. in order to remove the top section, you need to lossen up the other main caps. at that point. you can take a small punch and tap the bearing around and out

This is a rebuild. I have the block on a stand crankshaft up and upper bearings in place, crankshaft in place, lower bearings in the caps and ready to install the thrust bearings. they are located on the back cap and the bearing kit contains*****bearings. should there be 4?
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

thats all new inforrmation. good

yes, there should be 4 clam shells as they are called. it sounds like you got a set that was not complete.

make sure you verify the play when you torque the main caps.

I just checked the box of parts from the machine shop and there are only 3 "clamshells" in there. Is it possible that this engine only takes a lower on the back side of the cap? The cap has a drilled spot to accomodate the tab on the third clamshell.
Expert:  Roy replied 1 year ago.

both sides of the cap should have the spots. post pictures if you can

ok, did some reading and I called a co woker as we have a fleet of 200 ford e 250 vans with 5.4. he does all the overhauls and said some have 3 and some have 4. if the cut out is not there on the other side of the upper main cap then it is only 3.

I sent a file as well to remind you that you need new main cap bolts, not side bolts.
