I have a 1988 F-150 5.0. Every now and then it would not start

Resolved Question:

I have a 1988 F-150 5.0. Every now and then it would not start bcause the fuel pump on the frame would not run. I would shake the eec relay and fuel pump relay and I would then hear the frame fuel pump kick in and it would start. Now it will not start at all unless you put carburator cleaner in it then it dies when that is used up. I have changed the fuel pump relay and eec relay but it still will not start. I checked and I get no power to the fuel pump on the frame when I turn the key on. The button on the enertia switch is down and when I unplug it the engine will not turn over at all. I unplugged the fussable link at the solenoid and plugged it back in but that did not help.

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

Are you sure everything is hooked back up - recheck due to you had spark bow you do not. I need you to disconnect negative side of battery to reset computer

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

for 10 mins then reconnect and test to see if you have spark

Customer:

ok everything is hooked back up like it was and the negative battery cable is disconnected. Last February it did the same thing and I took it to a shop and they replaced the computer and it was fine. Lately it has been running kind of rough like before the computer was replaced. I would think the computer would last longer than 9 months

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

that is where it is headed

Customer:

remember the good old days when if you didnot have spark it was either the coil or the points. Occasionally the ballst resister would go out and throw you a curve

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

If there is grounds hooked to metal like CB, Radio aftermarket, ect.. most people think that just because it is metal I can hook the ground here are wrong, see this is an old model and it has power grounds and what I mentioned can blow a computer

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

Yeap

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

The system you have id EEC 5, the power grounds on newer car and trucks are protected now so us Ginny Pigs tested these trucks for Ford

Customer:

it has been 10 min since i disconnected the battery

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

Yes I can not suspect anything else but the computer. I checked and rechecked. See the computer is responsible for pulling the ground to EEC and Fuel pump.

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

relay

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

yes hook back up

Customer:

ok

Customer:

do i turn the key on to see if the pump works and try to start it

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

good thing back in the 80s this computer was about 799.00 dollars, now junk yard 25.00

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

yes

Customer:

I hooked it back up the pump did not run and it has no spark

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

I would replace the ECU

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

And get back to me

Customer:

ok what are the chances of getting a good one from a wrecking yard

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

Now, before you leave please rate my answer and from there at no charge to you. We can continue on

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

100 percent

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

go on the net plenty of them as long as you know the calibration # XXXXX you have it?

Customer:

do i need to take it out so i can match the numbers on it

Customer:

Where do I find that and how do you take it out. I know where it is

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

no usually, depending on where you get it they will need the calibration number on side of drivers door, that is if it is still there. If not, Yes you will need the #

Leon Davidian, Sr. :

I will get this for you hold Please

Customer:

Ok thanks for all your help. I will giveyou a good rating. Then when I comeback tothis site I can hook up with you.

Customer:

the calibration number is XXXXX the door
