cI have a 77 280z, 4 speed, manual. the Black main fusable link popped. I started isolating some things: disconnected alternator because the short went away after I disconnected it, tested good at shop, while the alternator is out :headlights, hazards, turn signals, dome light, dash lights, good. ( I found the brake lights were stuck on- disconnected one of the switch wires to continue isolating ). What I see odd: Amps are not showing on the meter, batt is new, is this correct?( I cant remember its been so long since I ran the thing.) Can you help please? I have a wiring diagram which is really nice but need to know where to look next, can you help?
Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!
I see that your question has been up for an extended time without a response and while although this vehicle isn't in my area of greatest expertise I would like to try to help.
From reading your post it sounds like the short that blows the fusible like goes away with the alternator disconnected and everything will operate as normal? I'm not sure how the alternator was tested but if it is shorted internally and blowing the fusible link then the problem has to be in the alternator. If you verified that there was a short in the alternator that went away when disconnected and now are having no problems with the fusible link with the alternator disconnected then it will need to be replaced.
