have a 1993 6g72 pajero that just replaced in tank fuel when it starts it coughs and splutters then kicks in and revs to 5000rpm and holds.if I undo air cleaner pipe off throttle body and move away it drops down in revs.any suggestions

Hi there,
Interesting problem! The high rev issue doesn't sound related to any fuel pump/tank work. Check the throttle body & cable/stop & the whole intake system for disconnected hoses/leaks. This is the only area that could effect a major increase in RPM..
