MY Gas gauge is not reading the correct amount of gas in the tamk. sometimes showhows full and then go to empty and then back to full again, and the door to the gas cap keeps coming open.

FixItMan :

Hello, and thank you for letting us help you with your automotive question. Can you tell me if the gauge is moving when you are driving? Does it move very fast or slowly?

Customer:

it moves when i am driving and will go all the way to empty when i have just fillled it up.

Customer:

it will move fast from full to empty and then back again.

FixItMan :

Okay. Thank you for the information. Typically this is a problem with the sensor in the fuel tank for the fuel level. This sensor is open to fuel in the tank. Over time carbon will build up on the sensor connections and cause this. You would need to replace the unit in the fuel tank to fix this. If you wanted to check it you would need to drop the tank and remove the unit. You could then take an ohm meter and and move the sensor to make sure that the resistance moves slowly.

Customer:

would this have anything to do with the door coming open when driving

FixItMan :

This should not have anything do do with it. As long as the tank is sealed and the cap is on then it will not affect it.

Customer:

ok thak you
