on a 1999 mercury cougar
when shifting into 3rd
if the rpms are high, (3000-3500rpms)
there is slight crunching/grinding
Is there anything I can do about this;
besides trying to keep rpms down when upshifting into 3rd? Does the whole clutch need replaced?
Is there something else. The rest of the shiftings are smooth and perfect; no matter what.

tims auto repair :

this is a standard transmission...right?

Customer:

yes; 5 sp

tims auto repair :

ok

tims auto repair :

yes

tims auto repair :

you will need to replace the clutch kit

tims auto repair :

does it also slip in 4th and 5th?

Customer:

I was hoping you were going to say there was a way to adjust it or something.

Customer:

No

Customer:

4th and 5th are puuurfect

Customer:

1st and 2nd are as well

tims auto repair :

you mean,,that 3d is the only gear it slips in?

Customer:

3rd does fine as long as the rpms aren't too high

Customer:

like(NNN) NNN-NNNN/p>

tims auto repair :

so..it just scrapes when shifting to 3rd

tims auto repair :

no slipping?

Customer:

it's like a slight crunch going in

Customer:

tims auto repair :

Customer:

tranny?

tims auto repair :

i wouldnt think this is a cltch problem,,sense it only does it in the one gear

tims auto repair :

sounds more like,,the sycronizers..in the transmission

Customer:

if we keep the rpms down and avoid the crunches can we get along for a while; do you think?

tims auto repair :

yes

tims auto repair :

i would think so

Customer:

any other advice?

Customer:

just bo't it for my son

tims auto repair :

well..i would think the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced to fix this

Customer:

problem arose while teaching him to drive manually

tims auto repair :

but,,it shouldnt hurt anything as long as you dont grind it into gear too much

tims auto repair :

i see

Customer:

the car's immaculate w/74k miles; thanks

tims auto repair :
