Customer Question

my lancer almost cuts out when the revs are dropping down to idle, once or twice it has actually cut out, its 1997, 1.5 litre engine, just had a full service and no obvious faults were picked up, any ideas on what the problen could be?

Optional Information:
Make: Mitsubishi
Model: lancer
Year: 1997

Already Tried:
at first i thought the alternator was charging the vehicle while it was running, i fitted the new alternator and it had the same problem, i then took the cap of and cleaned the points and rotary arm, still has the same problem

Hi,how are you? From what you are describing this is consistent with a vacuum leak either due to a cracked or broken hose or the intake manifold gasket is leaking.Check the vacuum lines around the intake manifold and spray some carburetor cleaner at the intake gasket while the engine is running to see if the sound of the engine changes. If the sound changes the intake gasket is leaking.

hi, ok i just tried this and it made no change to the engine noise, i then removed the air filter, air filter box and air pipe leading upto the throttle body, to check for any blockages, non were found, although i took the car for a run while these parts were still off the car and the problen has gone, i fit a new air filter about a month maybe two months ago on the service, wondering if that could have anything to do with it??
