1997 Honda: started making..goes away..4000 chain tensioner

Customer Question

have a 1997 Honda cbr 1100xx started making a noise that sounds like a loose chain (but its not) sounds goes away about 4000 rpm. Could it be the cam chain tensioner? How hard is that to fix and how do you do it?

Hello, yes the noise you are hearing is more than likely the timing chains rattling. The tensioner springs get weak and don't hold the chain tight. Changing the tensioners have several steps. The easiest (and best in my opinion) is to grab a Chilton's manual for your bike from the local parts store. It will give you detailed instructions with pictures on how to do nearly anything to your bike..
Hope this helps....
