I'm not sure that anyone's ever measured the exact amount of horsepower individual a/c compressors use to run. I'd expect its a minimal amount, ex 5-10hp at most. However, when the a/c is switched off the compressor clutch is disengaged. This means that when the a/c is off, basically no horsepower is being used to drive the compressor. The best way to reduce the load, is simply to switch it off.
