Resolved Question:

2002 VW Passat 1.8 turbo 20 valve 4 cylinder. Maintained per manual, 180K miles. 'Check engine' light stays on constantly with no apparent engine problem. Mechanic has checked diagnostics without finding the problem, has reset the light a couple of times but it kicks back on again. Tried replacing the gas cap without success. Cannot register car in Arizona with light on. Any ideas?

Hello

dl250567 :

Can you tell me what fault code is recorded when the light comes on?

dl250567 :

Thanks

dl250567 :

hi

Customer:

hello

dl250567 :

just waiting on my diagnostic laptop booting up

dl250567 :

P0171 is system too lean.

dl250567 :

P0411 is secondary air injection incorrect flow.

dl250567 :

This would suggest a split hose somewhere

Customer:

Would those be the cause of the check engine light? If I shared this info with the mechanic, do you think this would fix the problem?

dl250567 :

Allowing the engine to draw air

dl250567 :

Yes

dl250567 :

He would at least know where to start

Customer:

So, just to clarify: not enough or too much air?

dl250567 :

Incorrect amount of air

dl250567 :

System is unable to adjust which is why the sensors detect a fault

Customer:

Gotcha', thanks for checking this out. Do you want to know the outcome after I ask the mechanic to intervene?

dl250567 :

Does not always mean the sensor is at fault as some would believe

dl250567 :

Yes please

Customer:

I am new to this type of process. How would I let you know after I end this session?

dl250567 :

Just come back to this thread.
