Fiat Punto: XXXXX XXXXX Punto revs high whilst changing up gears

Resolved Question:

My 1995 Punto revs high whilst changing up gears during first 10 mins of starting the engine.
My garage suggests replacing the starter motor - does this make sense? If so, how does this work as I thought starter motor has no function after engine has started?

The starter motor really doesnt have any possible way to affect engine rpm while running. It sounds like you have an engine management problem, possibly a vacuum leak or faulty idle control valve. Would need more information to say for sure the cause, but its very unlikely has anything to do with the starter motor.
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Engine revs whilst clutch is depressed when changing up gear - up to 2500- 3000 rpm.

Referring to your reply, what additional info would you like?

Would you advise me NOT to have starter motor replaced?
Expert:  ksengage31 replied 4 years ago.
I would advise you to look into a possible engine issue, before thinking about changing the starter yes.
Is there any warning light showing on the dash when your driving?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
The air-bag light is on, but has been so, long before this problem arose

Ok. If your going to be testing for the problems yourself, i would look first for leaking vaccum hoses. Also worth checking into the idle air control valve.
If your taking it back to the shop, suggest they look closer at the engine controls. Or try a different shop. You'd be wasting money replacing a starter right now.
Id love to provide you with some info on how to test the IAC, but it appears i dont have the diagrams for your model (im in the united states). Ill leave this open for another expert who can maybe help further?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Yes please, leave this open - I'd like additional info to diagnose the problem.

Started car this morning and put foot on accelerator in neutral.
Engine revs increased and stayed up after releasing accelerator!

Ok this is all signs of a sticking throttle body plate . Just disconnect the battery clean the throttle body and throttle plate really good . These carbon up and stick and cause this exact issue . This is the next step. Hoped this helped . Positive feedback and bonuses greatly appreciated.
