Problem started..throttle is depressed a bit..about 30 mph and 60 mph

Customer Question

Problem started as an occasional one. After engine warms up it has a stutter or thump when the throttle is depressed a bit (maybe 15 to 30%), especially between about 30 mph and 60 mph. Now that we are having a stretch where winter temps are close to 70 deg F, it is more pronounced. I had been driving one interstate at 70 mph for an hour and stopped at off ramp stop sign. Pressing on throttle the engine made little power and ran very rough but it cleared up after several seconds. Similar event an hour later. After engine cooled later in the evening, just the little half a second thump/stutter a few times._car has 290,000 miles on it, plugs and wires have about 100,000 miles on them. Runs fine before it warms up any...first 10 minutes or so.

Customer :

Don't know yet. Did tune up and checked coil, vacuum master, air temp inlet
and throttle position sensor (changed TPS)(tune up was rotor, cap, plugs
& wires). Now I have a sure enough dead miss, rough running 3 cylinder with
bad smell at tail pipe. But I dropped a spark plug on its end that goes in
the engine, so I will get a new one next week to see if the drop broke the
insulation on the spark plug. It was late, so I had to go get a rental to
travel on business. If I still have a dead miss I will take to Toyota
service to see if they can pick up something with their equipment.

i have seen this before on a metro, it ended up being the distributor, gear wear threw off timing, have that checked.
