2001 Silverado 1500: highway speed..the engine cuts out

Customer Question

Driving a 2001 Silverado 1500 at highway speed. Suddenly the engine cuts out. I coast to the shoulder. It sputters to life again for a minute or two. Then cuts out again and won't start. Battery fully charged. Turns over well. Serpentine belt intact. No overheating. Does this sound like fuel pump? Coil? Something else?

Hello jacustomer, this is typically always the fuel pump. The only way to know for sure is with a fuel pressure gauge. If you do not have on then get in the truck and turn the key on without cranking the engine. See if you get a good buzzing from the fuel tank if not the pump is bad. You can even try the old fashioned way of having someone kick the tank while cranking it to see if it starts. If it does then replace the pump.

So the fuel pump for this vehicle is electronic and is located in the tank?

Expert:  FixItMan replied 5 years ago.
Exactly. The easiest way to get to it is by removing the bed off of the truck.
