The first step is to check the codes and see what comes up. There are many things it could be. Can you get a scanner to check the codes?

no

It could be a simple issue but without reading the codes I can't tell you what is wrong.

whatis a simple issue? what is worse case?
Expert:  Neal replied 5 years ago.
It could be a bad $20 sensor or it could be a engine failure. Another possibility is a bad fuel pump. Worst cas would be a engine failure requiring replacement of the engine but tat is a lot less likely than a more simple fix.

Could it be a timming belt or the main drive belt?
Expert:  Neal replied 5 years ago.
Yes it is a likely cause if it is overdue for one.
