Hello,

Hydrocarbons are basically unburnt fuel. Has it had a full tune up and oil change recently?

No

Thanks,

With the HC's only failing at the low speed test, i'm certain that a good tune up and oil change will reduce the HC's dramatically and it will pass.

HC's are created from a worn spark plug, plug wires, and old oil contains more HC's than usual.

Even though the truck has 166K miles, and oil change is done regularly, plugs have not been changed for maybe 2.5 years, is your answer still correct?

Hi,

Yes indeed..it won't take much to reduce the HC's in the low speed test. If they were failing at the high speed, then it gets MUCH more involved, but not so much at low.

OK, thank you, wish us luck!!!

Good luck!

Just make sure to get a full tune up and not just the spark plugs.

please advise what consists of a full tune-up? Thanks

Expert:  Virtual Wrench replied 5 years ago.

Hi,

Spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, PCV valve, replace any vacuum hoses that are possibly leaking and timing adjusted.
