2002 Mazda Protege DX: Grinding noise from rod..leads..brake problem

This answer was rated:

2002 Mazda Protege DX 2.0 Auto. Grinding noise from rod that leads from transmission to wheel. Not brake problem. Also some looseness on wheel. Differential connection problem or rod connection problen to wheel? Noise quiets down as I drive up to speed
This means you have a bad half shaft axle. I would not drive on this as it could make repairs more expensive and leave you stranded. the only reason it quiets down is the vibration gets alot faster.

Can this half shaft axle simply be replaced or does it require transmission invasion?
