Olds: smoke comes out tail pipe if i give it gas..quits

i have a olds 301 v6 wont stay running black smoke comes out tail pipe if i give it gas sitting it runs put in gear an it quits what should i look for am good at fixing things i be greatfull for the help thank you .Dennis

Excessive Emissions or Odors

Definition: Vehicle fails an emission test. Vehicle has excessive "rotten egg" smell. Excessive odors do not necessarily indicate excessive emissions.


Incorrect idle speed

Fuel in crankcase

  • Determine cause (flooding, excessive cranking etc.)
  • Change oil and filter
  • Check PCV system for contamination
  • Check EVAP system

Fuel Metering

Faulty fuel cap

  • Replace fuel cap

Lead contamination

  • Check for missing fill pipe restrictor
