Lincoln aviator: vibration..dealer says..) in cyl #5 are..compression

Customer Question

Our Lincoln aviator 2003 has 55k miles and vibration from engine and some power loss. The vehicle hardly moves when you take your foot off the brake. The dealer says that valve(s) in cyl #5 are stickly or not functioning properly with 5% compression loss. They reccomend and major engine "job' to fix the valves and on both sides since it is a V8 4.6 Liter DOHC. Have others have this problem this early in vehicle life? They estimate $4600 to fix. Seems ridiculous?

Sorry for the bad news but this is common enough that the factory released a Technical Service Bulletin on it. I have included it here.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE

CONDITION:

1.Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for "low" cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00.

2.If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01.

3.If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8.

NOTE DO NOT TRANSFER SPARK PLUGS. INSTALL NEW SPARK PLUGS IN REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD AND CAM ASSEMBLY.

NOTE THE ENGINE MISFIRE CONCERN IS TYPICALLY EXHIBITED ON THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD AND RARELY ON THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD. UNLESS CONFIRMED, THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD SHOULD NOT BE REPLACED AS AN "EXTRA MEASURE" SERVICE PRECAUTION.

NOTE THE REPLACEMENT CYLINDER HEAD WILL NOT IMPROVE OR REDUCE ENGINE HORSEPOWER OR TORQUE ABOVE ADVERTISED LEVELS.

What is reasonable estimate of labor for 1 cylinder head and cam shaft replacement from dealer? Dealer was suggesting both sides. We will do one side per the TSB. Is Cylinder 5 on left hand side?
Expert:  EMRSR replied 4 years ago.
#5 is the front drivers side cylinder. As you can see it is about 2k more to do both sides. Hope like heck the other never goes bad, it is only 4-5 hours nmore labor to do both instead of one side. I know the extra money for the other head is tough but with that low mileage you should consider it.graphicgraphic

Should I get the work done by private garage, it will be cheaper than dealer. Are some fit to do it?

Previously to this engine trouble, we had numerous faulty ignition coils at 42k miles replaced under recall. Will they have contributed to this lousy engine?

Expert:  EMRSR replied 4 years ago.
There is no way I gamble this with even a good independant, whats your warranty then???? It surely is not nationwide. There are a lot of goog knowledgeable techincians out there for sure, but they can't be at your side the way the dealer can back up his work, both parts and labor.
