Enhance life & reliability of cylinder walls

Customer Question

What is used on the cylinder walls of modern aluminum engine blocks to enhance life & reliability? Is it the casting material, or a cast iron or steel sleeve or liner, or a material plating or coating such as ‘Nikasil’ or ‘Nicom’? How is the cylinder wall protection installed or applied? Also, on aluminum heads, what is used for the valve seats and guides? How are they installed? Terry Lucas - Waukesha, WI [email protected] !

I can't speak for all of the manufacturers but Chrysler uses an aluminum engine for the 2.7 and it has a cylinder block that is made of heat treated aluminum with cast-in-place iron liners.

The guides are powdered metal that are pressed in. The seats are also pressed in place.

There other alum engines are designed similarly
