86 olds cutlass: I need to bleed brakes..wrench..rubber

Customer Question

I need to bleed brakes on a 86 Olds Cutless-bleeder values on the rear wheels do not look like standard bleeder values. Are these values open with a hex or allen wrench? They had a little rubber covering over both values-so it leads me to believe that what I'm looking at are standard issue values that came with the car. Also I replaced the steel line going to the back brakes from the junction below the master cylinder- is there anything special that I need to know about bleeding the brakes- This is my sons car so getting this right is paramount for me!

Expert's Answer

The bleeders are common hex heades bleeders. The fronts are 10 mm and the rear can be 8mm or 7mm headed,Since the master went dry-bench bleed the master -do it on the car -then keep the master full and let gravity pull the fluid thru (or use a vacuum type bleeder-pumpimg the pedal will foam the fluid)Since the brake line rusted out-you may not get the bleeders to open from rust and they will brake off-tge rears especially. If tnbey dont give, try a little head on rhem.Another option is to try to crack the rear brake lines loose(more then likly the lines will also brake from rust but ther are cheaper then wheel cyclinder and then you can bleed from the line. The fronts you can remove the caliper and invert and bleed from the bango fitting BUT ONLY GRAVITY BLEED_YOU WILL NEED TO BLOCK THE PISTON WITH WOOD TO KEEP FROM PUSING THE PISTON OUT IF YOU PUSH ON THE PEDAL

tge was a typo, sorry. At its simpleest. a vacuum bleeder is a hand held mighty vacuum pump with a resivoir or chamber to trap the fluid in so the pump doesnot get fliud in it and damaged and is avaible at your local parts house and even the larger sears stores. If you want to make one-get a mason canning jar-punch 2 holes in the lid-put 2 hoses thru the lid, 1 at the very top that would be the vacuum line andXXXXXdown-thats the fluid line-seal around the hoses with silicone-now instead or a hand pump run the vacuumline to the engine and let the engines running vacuum do the work for you to pull it thru while you watch the bottle fill-once you get get fluid-move to the nexr wheel/
