I hear and feel a thumping sound from the front end of my 84 900. It increases/decreases with wheel speed, whether transmission is engaged or not and whether brakes are engaged or not. Used to be only noticable when turning at high speed but is now constant at all speeds/turns.
Year: 1984Make: SaabModel: 900Engine: 8v turbo Already Tried: Checked for play in CV joints and wheel bearings but it all seems OK. I swapped out the drivers side axle with a known good one but that made no difference. Brake pads are new and the rotors are true. I'm wondering if it's an inner driver problem.
hello welcome to the site.
i will attempt to assist you on this.can you tell me if the tires have been inspected for any out or roundness or seperation ? can you feel this in the steering wheel ?
The tires haven't been checked. They are about 6 months old, the problem was there before I replaced them. I can feel the thump in steering wheel and brake pedal.
thanks for the update.if you grab the inner axle joint and see if their is side to side or any lateral play ?the problem you describe sure sounds like a inner cv joint or a internal bearing on the out put side of the transmission
the best thing is to inspect these inner cv joints by feel and see if their is any movement
There is a slight amount of play, should there be none at all? And since the problem exists with now 2 different CV joints then the problem must be with the bearing cup on the transmission correct?
i would make 100% sure the used axle you tried are not worn out or have play before you condemn a transmission.
their is a little amount of play but nothing should move more then a 1/8 " or less.
The axle I used came out of a car I had no front end problems with so I'm sure it's OK. I have heard that the driver cup the CV joint sits in can get worn so that's what I'm suspecting. So you're pretty sure it's an axle/CV problem rather than wheel bearings or brakes?
yea a wheel bearing will cause a consistent noise like a growling noise unless the bearing is missing parts then it can be felt .
the outer cv joint do wear out all the time and if a joint is bad it will make a thumping or clicking noise. this is usually caused from torn outer cv boots.
OK thanks Dino, I'll focus on the axle/CV. I'm ready to pay here but don't see an "accept" button to click?
ok please let me know what you find i want you to be happy with the help and advice given.
