My Service Engine soon light came on in my 2002 Mitsubishi Montero then it stopped running and will not start. My friend has the hand held computer he plugged in and it reads PO340 the camshaft Position sencor circuit malfunction. I ordered the part and plan on replacing it. Where is it located on the engine? Do you know what engine is in it? (XLS, sport, LS, ES, LTD)
3.0 or 3.5
Let me just give you the location on the CMP sensor for both engines.
On the 3.0L it is behind the cam gears.
On the 3.5L it is in the head,
I believe it is the xls 3.5 is it hard to change and can I get to it without removing a ton of stuff?
That is fairly easy to replace. The labor time is only,

When I went home last night and recieved the part from Rock Auto it didnt look like the one you are showing in the Photo. I called them and they said it is the correct part for the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero XLSXXXXX The part they sent has the wires attached and has a two bolt hold down. I also can not find any where on the motor that either the part you are showing me or the one they sent would go? Very confusing?

Wires attached....ah, that must be the 3.0L engine. That one is behind the cam gear, (under the timing cover) and takes a little longer to replace.
The problem is I can not find the cars manual but I believe with everything I have researched that the 2002 Montero that is not the sport, justXXXXXxls only comes with the 3.5 engine.
Yes the non sport model will have the 3.5L engine.
Then there should be a camshaft position sensor at the back of the head, looks like this,
