I have a 1996 Saab 9000 CS that has become difficult to get into reverse. The only way to reliably get it into reverse is to stall it in first by letting out the clutch while the engine is running (with a foot on the brake to prevent lurching). My mechanic says it may be the beginning signs of a worn clutch, which along with CV boots that need replacing would run about 1400. However the clutch feels otherwise, fine, and I noted through a Web search that the 9000's have a history of issues with synchro rings that result in this specific problem. What needs to be done to correctly diagnose the problem? And if it's the synchro rings what might it cost to replace those? Does it make sense to rebuild the transmission completely, and what might that cost? Thanks.

Hi, my name is XXXXX XXXXX think you are seeing the beginning of the clutch wear, or a pilot bearing hanging up slight ly, but also you need to check the hydraulics on it too. Try this, With out starting the car, will it go into reverse?
BTW, my name is Tom.
Hmm it appears my reply before the "BTW..." didn't got through. I'll repeat it. It doesn't seem to be affected by whether the car is on or off. It will sometimes go into reverse in either case, but generally not. The only reliable way is to stall it in first. Last night when I was parking it I was able to get it into reverse without stalling it out and I felt a "catch" of some kind in the stick. Is it possible that the ring on the stick that you pull up on to permit moving into the reverse stick position is in need of adjustment?
Hi, not and adjustment but a worn part on the shifter, It sounds like the shifter is not letting it disengage to move into reverse, This may be able to be repaired but likely it will need a shifter, as parts are not always available, a used shifter would also be an option. But if it doesnt shift when the car is off, you can rule out hydraulics and the syncros, since nothing is turning, It wil definetly be in the shifter, or one of the shifter forks.Tim
That's helpful Tim. Just one more question. How about the diagnosis of a clutch that's beginning to wear? Would that also be ruled out by the fact that it won't shift when the car is off or is that still a possibility?
Yes, i beleive the clutch is good, if it does it while not running i dont suspect it will be in the clutch.tim
Okay. Thanks for your help. At the very least I won't rush ahead with any repairs without asking good questions.
Any time my freind, let me know how it turns out.Tim
