Have a 99 Oldsmobile Silhouette with 115k miles. Loaded. Second owner, have changed the oil every 3-5k miles. Just did my first road trip Vermont to Michigan and blew head gaskets and the cooling system on the return trip. Both head gaskets. Fortunately no further motor damage so was able to save the head. Had 5 people in the vehicle with luggage but was not towing anything. Very hot day. Prior to this, the check engine light had come on, but went off after a new tank of gas and tightening the gas cap. The night before the low coolant light came on, but when we checked the coolant it wasn't low. Light did not come on again. Had the car fully repaired at the dealership: head gaskets, full servicing of cooling system, oil change. My Q: have been advised by two mehcanics that the intake manifold may leak and suck in coolant, that this is a known problem with this motor at times. Have been advised to sell the car. We're into it for serious coin now. What should I do?
Year: 1999Make: OldsmobileModel: SilhouetteEngine: 6 cylinder Already Tried: Nothing else, yet. Dealership pulled heads, replaced headgaskets and reassembled engine replaced ignition plug and wires replaced thermostat. Cooling system flush and add conditioner, flush entire system and refill with new DEX Coolant. Lube, oil and filter. Checked fluids. Thorough road test: fully warmed it. Let it cool. Warmed it again. Ran well. One note: We then drove 400 miles home. Climbing steep slow grade began to warm SLIGHTLY but quickly resumed cooler level at crest of mountain (VT). Very hot day.
Greetings from Mikey at Just Answer! My opinion is you may as well keep driving it and get your money's worth out of it. You have already done the head gaskets and the intake gasket as part of the other job. Sure these engines have a lot of issues, but since you already fixed it, why bail now?Truth be told, these vans have low resale value because everyone knows about the engine problems. I don't see that selling it is a good option. Perhaps the time to sell it would have been before you had the engine worked on, but not now.
