Customer Question

Vehicle: 2002 Kia Optima
Mileage: About 92K
Transmission: Automatic
Problem: The transmission periodically does a hard shift into (what I believe is) 3rd gear. More frequent occurrence at speeds around 65 MPH or higher. May also shift UP into 3rd gear when pulling a hill or under load. Transmission fluid was changed several thousand miles ago, but other transmission services have not been done.

Optional Information:
Year: 2002
Make: Kia
Model: Optima

Already Tried:
We are flumoxed. We tried having the transmission serviced. Also, Check Engine light is on.

Hi

Changing the transmission fluid is the service. There is nothing else to service on the trans.

Check to make sure the trans fluid is full. (Engine running in park)

Check the color of the fluid and make sure it is not dark brown or black. Also smell it to see if it is burnt.

The first thing I would need to help you is getting the check engine light code read. Autozone or other auto parts stores do this for free.

Get the code numbers and tell me if this is a 6 or 4 cyl engine.

Do this and get back to me.

Anything else is just guess work.
