what is the purpose of a thermostat in a engine. and is it nessary.

the thermostat let the engine come up to tempature, with out it the coolant would flow through the engine freely and not allow it to heat up to operating temps, with out it, you would not have a heater, nor would the computer go into closed loop, thus you would be running in open loop and the computer wont control the engine properly. It can also cause an overheating problem if the coolant doesnt stay in the radiator long enough.Tim
