Customer Question

I am trying to set the timing on a 2000 civic si and am having difficulty with the timing belt tensioner. The belt seems too loose after the tensioner is installed. Any ideas?

Optional Information:
Year: 2000
Make: Honda
Model: civic si
Engine: 1.6

Already Tried:
The spring and tensioner unit are new. I have tried sliding the tensioner in place and torquing down the tensioner bolt to specs.

What you're going to want to do is let it adjust by the spring, tighten down the bolt, roll the engine over a couple turns, counter clockwise, making sure the front side of the belt is tight when you stop, at this point loosen the bolt on the tensioner, it should adjust further, retorque and repeat one more time. At this point the belt should be at proper tension. Before you reinstall the covers I would check the alignment of all your timing marks one last time.
