well, gauges are matched to senders and not all of them are compatible with eachother. obviously your gauge isnt compatible with your sender. you need to get the right gauge for your sender or the right sender for your gauge. usually it has to be the same brand.

the gauge is oem and sender ac delco
Expert:  mike replied 7 years ago.
they can be both be oem but for a different year or model. ac delco makes parts for lots of cars. youre going to need to verify that they are the right parts for your year of car because it sounds like one of them is the wrong one. check the part numbers. did you buy them new or used?

got the gauges out of a junkyard, and the sender new. i think that the gauges are out of a 80 firebird, and i just found out that the original temp sender was for a 78 TA. you think i should put the original gauges in with the new sending unit that i just got for a 79 ?

if your new sending unit was for a 79 TA then yes. you cant mix and match gauges and senders. you don't need to install the gauge in the dash to test it. you can hotwire it off of the sender if thats easier.
