Subaru Outback: 2.5L..an engine gone bad, bearing or rod, whatever

Customer Question

my longtime mechanic tells me that the noise i hear from the 2.5L engine in my Subaru Outback (03, 60,900miles) is an engine gone bad, bearing or rod, whatever. Independently, Subaru service says the same. Obviously, no one has taken it apart yet, but I believe them. The question is - replace the whole engine with a Marshall or Jasper rebuild (36mo/100k warranty) for around $5,000 or buy 09 Forester (I do like Subarus). All thoughts appreciated.

Tough decision with that low miles, have you considered a used engine and or then possibly trading in or saleing this car? just a thought I have had great success with some quality used parts-good luck.

you're suggesting used as opposed to rebuilt. are there reliable sources or just trusting salvage yards? Ballpark price? Jasper wants $5400 for rebuilt, RockAuto only $2400, both same warranty. Thinking of going for the Rock.

Just an option-speak with your mechanic and get recommendations, but remember paying shipping from elsewhere is sometimes worth it.

stay away from jasper motors sir i had no luck with them. i would buy short block from your local subaru dealer motor about 1900.00 and gasket kit is around 300.00 good luck
